Michigan State likely put the finishing touches on its 2025 transfer class when it landed former Texas Tech defensive back Devynn Cromwell on Tuesday. Cromwell announced his decision via social media after spending the previous two days in East Lansing on an official visit.

Cromwell (6-1, 200) spent one season with Texas Tech in 2024. He used a waiver to receive another year of eligibility after participating in the Red Raiders’ senior day festivities last fall. Prior to his time at Texas Tech, Cromwell spent four seasons at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada.

Cromwell has one season of eligibility remaining and is likely to start off at the nickel position for the Spartans.

Cromwell logged 20 tackles in 179 defensive snaps last fall. He also tallied 87 special teams snaps. He was targeted eight times last year and only allowed three completions, according to Pro Football Focus.

Cromwell had a strong junior season for the University of Guelph in 2023. He logged 26 tackles (2.5 for a loss), five pass deflections, one interception and one forced fumble that year. Cromwell received Second Team Ontario University Athletics All-Star honors that year. He earned First Team honors in 2021.

Cromwell becomes Michigan State’s fourth transfer defensive back addition of the spring, and the seventh such addition dating back to the winter portal window.

Michigan State added a pair of safeties this spring in Tracy Revels (Bowling Green) and Dontavius Nash (Eastern Carolina). Revels (6-1, 185) committed to the Spartans on April 27. He had 40 tackles and one pass deflection last fall. Nash committed to Michigan State on May 6.

The Spartans also added former Texas-San Antonio and junior college cornerback Anthony Pinnace on April 27. They brought in cornerbacks Joshua Eaton (Texas State), NiJhay Burt (Eastern Illinois) and Malcolm Bell (UConn) during the winter portal period.

Michigan State did lose veteran defensive back Dillon Tatum (Northwestern) to the transfer portal, but Cromwell, Burt, Jeremiah Hughes, Ade Willie and true freshman Aydan West, among others, can all feature at nickel, where Tatum figured to play some.

Revels and Nash will likely provide depth at the safety positions, with Cromwell in the mix, too. Michigan State will return starting safeties Malik Spencer and Nikai Martinez, along with Justin Denson, Armorion Smith and Khalil Majeed, among others, as reserves.
