Thomas (6-1, 175), of Lakewood (Oh.) St. Edward High School, had been committed to Iowa State since early February. He was offered by Michigan State safeties coach James Adams during a workout at his school in mid-May, quickly scheduling an official visit to campus. The communication with the Spartan staff began back during the January evaluation period, extending into the spring.

“He came to see me in January and we have been talking this off-season, until Coach James came out to see me again,” Thomas previously told SpartanMag.com. “He likes that I can make plays at every position in the secondary. He also likes my IQ on the field, really leading my guys and helping the people around me.”

The safety is ranked a three-star, the No. 788 overall recruit in the 2026 On3 Industry Rankings. He is also ranked the No. 73 safety and the No. 32 recruit in Ohio.

Thomas is the second commitment from the official visitor weekend, joining linebacker Braylon Hodge of Englewood (CO) Cherry Creek High School. Hodge announced his commitment via social media on Sunday evening.

The duo spent the weekend on campus with fellow Michigan State 2026 commitments in Sioux Falls (SD) Jefferson High School tight end Eddie Whiting, who was also on an official visit, along with in-state commitments, quarterback Kayd Coffman of East Kentwood, and offensive lineman Eli Bickel of North Branch who spent Saturday on campus on unofficial visits. The Spartan class now holds six total commitments, also including Mansfield (OH) Lexington High School tight end Joey Caudill.

Michigan State also had a pair of cornerbacks on campus this weekend for official visits in Georgia product KJ Deriso, along with South Carolina cornerback Jeremiah Favorite.

At the safety position, the Spartans are still actively pursuing 2026 four-star Dearborn (Mich.) Divine Child safety Marcello Vitti, an Iowa commit. The Hawkeyes are fighting hard to keep Vitti’s pledge.
