2027 California DB Khalil Terry decommits from Michigan State

EAST LANSING, Mich. – 2027 four-star Tustin (Calif.) defensive back Khalil Terry announced Sunday night that he has decommitted from Michigan State.
“First and foremost, I’d like to thank the Michigan State football program for having faith in me early in the recruiting process,” Terry wrote in a statement released to Twitter. “I never imagined that I’d be in the position that I’m in now. With so many options, and after discussing it with my family, I have decided to de-commit from Michigan State.
“We feel it is in my best interest to open up my recruitment and take a look at all of my options. I only get one shot at this, so I want to make sure I’m making the right decision for the long term. Once again, I want to thank Coach (Jonathan) Smith, Coach KB (Keith Bhonapha) and Coach (Blue) Adams. I will released a Top 7 in the coming weeks.”
Michigan State earned a surprise commitment from Terry on Dec. 1, 2024, following his unofficial visit for the Spartans’ season finale against Rutgers. Terry’s commitment came early for a 2027 prospect, and his recruitment has since blown up.
On3 released its initial 2027 On300 Rankings nearly four months after Terry’s commitment. At the time of his decision, the Spartans hadn’t even signed any of their 2025 commits.
Terry held additional offers from Tennessee, Nebraska, Utah and Washington, among others, at the time of his commitment to Michigan State. He has since picked up offers from the likes of Ohio State, Georgia, Alabama, Notre Dame and Oregon.

Terry is the No. 145 recruit, No. 14 safety and No. 16 player from California in the 2027 class, per the On3 Industry Rankings.
Demetrice Martin’s decision to leave Michigan State for UCLA following the 2024 season likely played a role in Terry’s decision to decommit from the Spartans. Martin, who grew up less than an hour from Terry’s high school in southern California, offered the talented defensive back and three of his teammates in November 2024.
Michigan State now holds zero 2027 commitments. The Spartan staff will spend the remainder of the summer shoring up their 2026 class, which has seen an uptick in commitments over the last few weeks. The Spartans landed 2026 three-star defensive end Fameitau Siale and 2026 three-star safety Jordan Vann on Sunday, bringing their total number of 2026 commits to 15.
Meanwhile, Michigan State reached out to several 2027 recruits early Sunday morning, which was the first day of the contact period for rising high school juniors.
