Michigan State signed the face of its 2026 recruiting class – four-star quarterback Kayd Coffman – on Wednesday.

Coffman (6-3, 200) committed to the Spartans back in January, and remained committed throughout the summer and fall despite pushes from other programs to sway his Michigan State pledge.

Coffman chose the Spartans over offers from Ole Miss, Iowa State and Syracuse, among others. Other programs, like Ohio State, made pushes of their own in the summer and fall.

Michigan State’s firing of Jonathan Smith was viewed as the biggest hurdle toward retaining Coffman’s commitment, but Coffman quickly reaffirmed his plans to sign with the Spartans after the hiring of Pat Fitzgerald. Coffman and Fitzgerald first connected on Monday evening.

Coffman is the No. 287 recruit in the 2026 class, per the Rivals Industry Rankings. He’s also the No. 18 quarterback and No. 5 player from Michigan in his class.

SCOUTING REPORT

Coffman is known for his arm talent and advanced football IQ, especially for the high school level. He’s poised in the pocket, but has the ability to stretch plays with his feet and throw on the run. Coffman has deceptive speed, which makes him close to a complete quarterback prospect.

The Michigan State signee is coming off a strong senior season with East Kentwood High School, which earned a 10-2 record and advanced to the state semi-finals, where it lost to eventual state champions, Detroit (Mich.) Catholic Central.

Coffman totaled 2,599 passing yards, 34 touchdowns and four interceptions during his senior season. He also rushed for 710 yards and eight touchdowns.
