Michigan State signed 2026 three-star defensive back Brayden Thomas, of Lakewood (Ohio) St. Edward High School, on Wednesday.

Thomas (6-1, 175) committed to Michigan State during the first weekend of June official visits. He flipped his commitment from Iowa State. Thomas visited campus for multiple home games this fall.

“It definitely shocked me,” Thomas previously told SpartanMag of his official visit. “I didn’t know a lot about Michigan State, and I had never really been up there. My first time going up there, it definitely exceeded expectations. I’m glad I took the visit because I ended up loving it up there.”

West Virginia and Louisville, among others made pushes for Thomas during Michigan State’s coaching change, but Thomas shut down his recruitment after speaking with Pat Fitzgerald on Tuesday.

Thomas is the No. 941 recruit in the 2026 class, per the Rivals Industry Rankings. He’s also the No. 90 safety and No. 44 player from Ohio in his class.

SCOUTING REPORT

Thomas plays for Cleveland-area powerhouse St. Edward, so he’ll arrive on campus well-coached. He’s well-regarded for his speed and athleticism, along with his knack for making plays at his size. Thomas gained weight as a senior, so he’ll arrive in the college weight room as an early-enrollee ready to roll.

Thomas tallied 94 tackles (10 for a loss), one sack, one interception and seven pass deflections as a senior this fall. St. Edward lost in the state semi-finals last Friday, but finished 11-3 on the season.

Thomas’ older brother, Loghan Thomas, is sophomore defensive lineman at Notre Dame.
