Michigan State received a surprise commitment and signature from 2026 three-star safety Jonathan Granby on Wednesday.

Granby had been committed to Georgia Southern since September. He held additional offers from Georgia Tech and Western Kentucky, among others, before committing to the Panthers.

Granby took an official visit to Michigan State last weekend. His visit was interrupted by the dismissal of former head coach Jonathan Smith.

Newly-hired Pat Fitzgerald re-offered Granby Tuesday evening. Granby quickly committed to the Spartans and signed on Wednesday.

Granby is the No. 2,391 recruit in the 2026 class, per the Rivals Industry Rankings. He’s also the No. 147 quarterback and No. 229 player from Georgia in his class.

Granby’s commitment helps replace the loss of former Spartan commit Jordan Vann, of Middletown (Ohio) High School, who flipped to Louisville earlier this week. Michigan State also expects to sign Ohio safety Brayden Thomas and Florida safety Eliyjah Caldwell-Hardy on Wednesday.

SCOUTING REPORT

Granby played quarterback and defense in high school, but the Michigan State staff projects him as a safety. Granby tallied over 1,800 all-purpose yards as a senior. He was responsible for 27 touchdowns, 53 tackles and four pass deflections. He runs a 4.4-second 40-yard dash.

Granby helped lead Fellowship Christian School to a 10-1 record this fall. Fellowship Christian will face Savannah (Ga.) Calvary Day School in the Georgia private school state championships on Friday. Granby also plays baseball for Fellowship Christian School.
