V-Cast: Confidence and chemistry growing stronger as Michigan State moves closer to start of Big Ten play

EAST LANSING, Mich. – There is a sense of growing excitement around the Michigan State football building in the wake of the Spartans’ victory over a Power 4 non-conference opponent in Boston College last weekend.
While achieving the objective of beating a quality ACC opponent was significant. The way in which the Spartans won the game, gritting out a 2-OT victory, may have had even greater longterm significance given the way in which the win appears to have galvanized the Michigan State football team.
Now, the Spartans are back at work preparing for a Week 3 match-up against an FCS opponent in Youngstown State. This game should provide Michigan State with an opportunity to address areas that need to be tightened up prior to the start of Big Ten play two weekends from now.
After interviews with quarterback coach Jon Boyer, offensive linemen Conner Moore and Caleb Carter and wide receivers Chrishon McCray and Alante Brown, SpartanMag staffers Jim Comparoni and Paul Konyndyk check in from Perles Plaza with the latest V-Cast.

V-CAST TOPICS
Growing Up: With quarterbacks coach Jon Boyer available for interviews on Tuesday, it should come as no surprise that one of the primary topics was the play of Michigan State quarterback Aidan Chiles. Head coach Jonathan Smith described Chiles’ performance against Boston College as his best game as a Spartan earlier this week. Boyer detailed some of the reasons why including the success that Chiles had making checks at the line of scrimmage. On several different occasions, Chiles accurately assessed the intent of the Boston College defense before the snap and changed the play at the line of scrimmage to put Michigan State in a better position to be successful. Boyer was also pleased with some of the in-game adjustments that were made by his starting quarterback that enabled the Spartans to make significant gains on plays that didn’t work as well the first time they were run against BC.
Offensive Line: Michigan State has stuck with its liberal substitution pattern with the front five. The Spartans have played upwards of nine offensive linemen each of the past two weeks and appear to be committed to a large playing group up front moving forward. Flipping between the right and left tackle position throughout the game has been an adjustment for first-year Spartan Connor Moore, who is gaining confidence in his ability to play either right or left tackle. On the interior o-line, shuffling of veteran guards Caleb Carter, Luka Vincic, Gavin Broscious, and Kristian Phillips has created a drive to play at consistently high level. Center Matt Gulbin has been the straw that stirs the drink for the Spartan o-line.
