EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State is three days into training camp ahead of the 2025 football season and just days aways from putting on pads. After practice on Thursday, Spartan defensive coordinator Brian Lindgren and transfer portal additions Matt Gulbin, Luka Vincic, and Omari Kelly met with media members to provide an update on the offense.

After interviews, SpartanMag.com staffers Jim Comparoni and Paul Konyndyk checked in from the George Perles Plaza to provide news, analysis, and opinion in the latest V-Cast.

V-CAST TOPICS

What a difference a year makes: Lindgren made no attempt to mask his excitement over the progress his offense has made from this time last year until now. The second-year Michigan State offensive coordinator believes the Spartans will be markedly better on his side of the ball, as the result of personnel upgrades at positions such as offensive line and wide receiver and greater experience at quarterback where both starter Aidan Chiles and back-up Alessio Milivojevic have benefited from having a fulltime quarterbacks coach in Jon Boyer.

Weapons at Wide Receiver: Lindgren really likes the job that Michigan State did in the transfer portal in adding four wide receivers that all have the ability to be productive pieces around sophomore star Nick Marsh. Lindgren credited Michigan State’s recruiting personnel with identifying quality receiver that cannot only catch the ball but has explosive run-after-catch potential. Central Michigan transfer Evan Boyd is a physical big-bodied wide receiver that should provide the Spartans with a quality back-up behind Marsh. Crishon McCray (Kent State) is an explosive home run threat as a slot receiver. Omari Kelly (Middle Tennessee St.) is do-everything receiver that runs great routes and has good hands. Rodney Bullard (Valdosta) possesses explosive quickness. Lindgren also had praise for freshman wide receiver Charles Taplin, a speedster with big-play potential.

Competition is fierce on the offensive line: Gulbin and Vincic were adamant in their belief that the Michigan State offensive line will be up to task of protection Aidan Chiles while taking a substantial step in run blocking. A steal out of the transfer portal, Gulbin is a physical center that should be asset at the point of attack for the Spartans. When asked about his portal recruitment, Gulbin indicated that offensive line coach Jim Michalczik was one of the reasons why he chose Michigan State over several additional options. Vincic is in a serious competition with Kristian Phillips for the starting job at right guard. Vincic  is one of the more versatile interior offensive linemen on the Spartan roster.
