Michigan running back commit Savion Hiter is a five-star talent, the top-ranked prospect at his position and the No. 8 recruit overall in the 2026 class. He’s also a preseason All-American according to both Rivals and MaxPreps

Hiter was one of two rushers to receive the first-team accolade from MaxPreps. Alabama commit Ezavier Crowell, the nation’s No. 2 running back behind Hiter, also made the first team and appeared on Rivals’ list alongside Georgia pledge Jae Lamar and Texas commit Derrek Cooper

The most recent Michigan commit is without a doubt a high-potential running back prospect, but he’s also an elite football player right now.

“Looks to be a natural runner,” Rivals director of scouting and rankings Charles Power wrote in Hiter’s scouting report. “An extremely fluid and smooth mover who changes directions effortlessly. Shows excellent acceleration. Cuts on a dime and makes defenders miss in space. Runs with pace and instincts. A strong tackle-breaker who runs through contact due to a strong leg drive. A phenomenal high school football player who also makes big plays on defense. Has the potential and upside to be one of the best running back prospects in several cycles.”

He rushed for 1,698 yards and 26 touchdowns as a junior, averaging 10.8 yards per carry. Hiter is an explosive athlete who starred in track and field as a freshman. The running back recorded a triple jump around 45 feet.

On the football field, he shrugs off tacklers, showcases breakaway speed and makes plays out of the backfield as a receiver. Hiter even showcases some polish as a pass blocker. The Michigan commit draws comparisons to Bijan Robinson and TreVeyon Henderson, former five-star backs who went on to prolific college careers and then the NFL.

Hiter picked Michigan over Tennessee, Georgia and Ohio State Tuesday. The Volunteers were considered U-M’s stiffest competition, and the SEC program kept things very close. After announcing his commitment to the Wolverines, Hiter explained why Michigan stood out.

“It’s such a great place,” Hiter told The Wolverine. “Everybody keeps their discipline. It’s like a brotherhood over there. The culture is crazy… The development was a big part of it. The development is great.”

He’s the second Rivals Preseason All-American in the Wolverines’ class, joining quarterback commit Brady Smigiel

MaxPreps also released a class of 2027 preseason All-American list, featuring quite a few Michigan targets. Five-star Penn State running back commit Kemon Spell, five-star offensive tackle Mark Matthews and five-star cornerback John Meredith III all made the first team.

Top 100 running back Noah Roberts, Top 100 wide receiver Monshun Sales, Top 100 wide receiver Dakota Guerrant and Top 100 cornerback Duvay Williams all slotted into the second team.
