High school football season is officially back.

While most Michigan commits will hit the field this week, a handful were in action over the weekend, including Rivals300 quarterback Brady Smigiel.

However, Smigiel had a bit of a rocky start to this year, completing 29-of-46 passes for 277 yards and two touchdowns with three interceptions. His Newberry Park (Calif.) High team fell to Long Beach (Calif.) Millikan, 49-20.

Three-star tight end Mason Bonner had a quiet start to his senior season, logging just one reception for 26 yards in Denver (Colo.) Mullen’s 30-14 loss to Irvine (Calif.) Crean Lutheran. Bonner added a tackle on defense and served as the Mullen punter.

The most impressive performance of the week may have come from three-star running back Jonathan Brown.

While all eyes are on five-star running back pledge Savion Hiter, Michigan may have found a steal in Brown. He opened up his senior season with 60 yards rushing, 30 yards receiving and the game-winning touchdown in Columbus (Ohio) St. Francis DeSales’ 14-13 victory over Delaware (Ohio) Olentangy Berlin.

Brown, who posted eye-popping testing times this offseason, also saw time on the defensive side of the ball, where he recorded three tackles and a sack. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Brown rise in the rankings as the season goes on.

The state of Georgia actually kicked off its high school season two weeks ago. Four-star cornerback Dorian Barney has seen minimal action come his way in Carrollton (Ga.) High’s blowout wins. On the flip side of the coin, Bear McWhorter has been a dominant force in the trenches for Cartersville (Ga.) Cass, which is off to a 1-1 start.

Top 100 offensive lineman Malakai Lee and his Honolulu (Hawaii) Kamehameha team are also off to a 1-1 start.

There will be several more Michigan commits in action this week. The biggest game for Michigan fans to follow is Washington (D.C.) Gonzaga vs. Chesapeake (Va.) Oscar Smith, which features a pair of highly touted commits in five-star EDGE Carter Meadows and Rivals300 wide receiver Travis Johnson.

The Wolverine will be on site to provide live updates from that contest.

Michigan has 23 verbal commits and entered the day with the No. 10 ranked 2026 recruiting class nationally, per the Rivals Industry team recruiting rankings. Michigan is also ranked No. 4 in the Big Ten. USC currently has the top class in the conference.
