Newsstand: Decision day arrives for Michigan target Youssef Khayat

Decision day is here for top Michigan basketball recruiting target Youssef Khayat, who could fill the final scholarship spot remaining on the 2022-23 roster. He is set to make his decision on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. ET, so finality is on the way for his courtship.
Khayat (6-9) played for Limoges CSP’s U21 team, which is in one of the most competitive leagues in Europe. This past season, he averaged 17.4 points, 7.7 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game while also getting some run with Lebanon’s national team.
The Wolverines were named a finalist over the weekend with Xavier, DePaul and Wake Forest in contention. Visa issues have prevented Khayat from visiting schools, making it likely he chooses his spot sight unseen. Howard has been the point man in this recruitment and is working on closing the deal.
Some have compared Khayat to former Wolverine and current Orlando Magic forward Franz Wagner. While those comparisons might be lofty, he could factor in similarly to the Michigan lineup if he hits campus.
Michigan has been working diligently to replace the two scholarships lost by the departures of Caleb Houstan and Moussa Diabate. The two Wolverines entered the 2022 NBA Draft and were selected in the second round by the Orlando Magic and Los Angeles Clippers, respectively. Michigan also had another scholarship to fill after the transfer of point guard Frankie Collins to Arizona State.

They added Duke transfer wing Joey Baker a few weeks back, giving them some experience and shooting off the bench. Adding Khayat could give them the length and defense it needs on the wing for next year’s roster.
Whether or not Khayat commits, the Michigan roster could potentially be set. They would love to be greedy and grab the young Lebanese forward to round out a team that has Big Ten title and national championship aspirations.

Michigan quote of the day
“We had Caleb in early in the process. He can be a very capable shooter. He has a very team-oriented outlook, he guards, he does a lot of little things that don’t show up in the boxscore — he’s ahead of the ball, he’s the first one back defensively, he’ll box out a guy so his teammate can get the ball. He’s just a very smart, sound player who quietly does winning things. That’s kind of his personality, too.”
