Michigan hockey hadn’t played a Big Ten foe since Dec. 1 but returned to conference action in style with a 7-1 win over Michigan State Friday night at Munn Ice Arena in East Lansing, the home of the Spartans. The Wolverines were up 3-0 after the first period, 4-0 after the second and poured in 3 goals in the third to the Spartans’ one in a dominant victory. The game marked Michigan State’s first home loss of the season and first regulation setback since Oct. 27 (5-1 at Boston College). Here are highlights from the win:

“That’s the game is races and battles, and I thought our guys did a great job tonight,” head coach Brandon Naurato told MGoBlueTV after Michigan’s win. “They came in here with a business mentality, and even when we scored the first couple goals, I don’t think we got too high like guys were celebrating. They were getting to work.”

“We played the right way for 60 minutes,” Michigan junior Dylan Duke — who scored two goals, one in the first period and another in the second — said. “That’s what happens when we do things the right way. We played hard, played our identity and we have the ability to win games like that.”

Here are more stats from Friday’s win over Michigan State. The Wolverines dominated in almost all facets.

Michigan junior quarterback J.J. McCarthy won the national championship Jan. 8, declared for the NFL Draft less than a week later, got engaged and also has his 21st birthday Saturday (Jan. 20). It’s been quite a couple weeks for the Maize and Blue legend, who led the team to a 15-0 record and the program’s first national title since 1997.

Quote Of The Day

“I’m still hungry. The season wasn’t how I wanted it to be necessarily, and just popping off the way that I did on the biggest stage, it’s like ‘that’s great.’ But what’s better than working hard in the off-season and being able to do it again? So that’s where my mindset is. I feel like I’ll be one of the leaders on the team now and that’s what I want to implement to the guys. Everybody’s gone right now, so what we have to do is continue to stay together. Bring the young guys up and have the older guys like Kalel and I mentor Cole Cabana, Ben Hall, Jordan Marshall. That’s where my mindset is. Even though we have the saying that ‘the job’s finished,’ we still want more.”
