The Michigan Wolverines hockey program is heading back to the NCAA Tournament, announced as a No. 3 seed in the dance and taking on No. 2 seed North Dakota in the St. Louis Regional at 7:30 p.m. CT Friday. The game will be broadcast live on ESPNU.

Michigan State earned the No. 1 seed in the region and will play No. 4 Western Michigan in the other regional semifinal. The two semifinal winners will play on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. CT for a spot in the Frozen Four. It sets up a potential Big Ten Tournament championship rematch with the Spartans, who won a 5-4 overtime thriller in East Lansing on Saturday night.

U-M grabbed an at-large bid en route to making the program’s 41st appearance in the NCAAs, the most by any program in the country. Michigan is 57-32 in NCAA Tournament play with a record nine national titles under its belt.

This is the third time that Michigan has been the No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament since the field was expanded to 16 teams. The Wolverines were No. 3 in 2003, 2006 and 2010 and made the Frozen Four during the 2003 run. Michigan hopes to add to its run of 27 Frozen Four appearances and win its first national title since 1998, where it defeated Boston College in overtime.

Michigan quote of the day

“The University of Michigan is among the elite institutions in the world and it is both an honor and privilege to be named its head men’s basketball coach. This is a dream come true for me, my wife Anna, and my boys Jack, Charlie and Eli. I want to offer my thanks to President Santa Ono, Athletics Director Warde Manuel, and the U-M Board of Regents for this opportunity.

“None of this would be possible, however, without the tremendous people at Florida Atlantic University. They embraced and supported me, as well as my family, from the minute I walked on campus. I can’t thank my players, my staff, the administration and the entire Boca Raton community enough. We made memories at FAU that will last a lifetime. This was an incredibly difficult decision — however, I am deeply committed to reigniting the proud tradition of Michigan Basketball. I can’t wait to get started.”
