Dusty May Introductory Press Conference Michigan Coach Talks Vision, Philosophy, Accepting Job

Tweets Of The Day

Former Michigan basketball coach John Beilein was involved in the search that concluded with athletic director Warde Manuel hiring Dusty May as the program’s new leader. Beilein took to Twitter to share his excitement and offer his support.

It’s exciting to see @CoachDustyMay as the MBB coach at @umichbball,” Beilein wrote. “He has had great success as a HC and assistant and has worked hard for many years for this fabulous opportunity. Anytime he asks, I will be available to help him. Congrats Dusty, Anna, and family! #goblue

Beilein also joined ‘The HUGE Show,’ a statewide radio program, for his weekly interview, sharing what it was like to be asked to help with the search.

“At my age now, you’re always trying to give back as much as you can — whether it’s with talent or treasure or anything,” Beilein said on ‘The HUGE Show.’ “And when he reached out, honestly, I got emotional about it, actually. I want Michigan basketball … we worked so hard, [wife] Kathleen and I, for the first four years, they were so hard, to get it going in the right direction.

“And don’t forget, I gave up a Final Four team in West Virginia to come here. I could’ve stayed, plus I gave up a million-and-a-half dollars to come here. That’s back in the day when people didn’t buy out buyouts. It’s emotional for me to get this program back to where we worked so hard to achieve it to be.”

“I like it. I really like it,” Big Ten Network analyst Trent Meacham said. “Judging his work the last couple years, following Florida Atlantic, 1) I love how they play. He spreads the court, he really used his guards well. If you look at their numbers, those guys have really improved over the course of their careers. I like that. And also just watching him on the sidelines, I love his demeanor. He’s collected, he’s steady, he seems confident. There’s an optimism that he kind of leads with from the sideline that I really enjoy, that I think will suit him well in the Big Ten.”

Michigan head football coach Sherrone Moore showed up at May’s introductory press conference.

May discussed his thoughts on NIL during his Michigan press conference.

“We obviously have one of the best alumni bases in the world,” May began. “And it’s a university that really supports athletics. Over the last year, our roles and responsibilities as coaches change and evolve. I probably spend about 25 to 30 percent of my time on NIL and recruiting donors, giving access to our program, doing anything we could to provide opportunities for our players. And it is what it is. I’ve learned to enjoy it, and it’s not going away. And I’d love for our players to be taken care of as much as possible and rewarded for the work they put in.”

Quote Of The Day

“I asked him other questions about his coaching style and what his staff and what his practices would look like. Every answer was perfect.”
