TheWolverine.com‘s Clayton Sayfie, Chris Balas and Anthony Broome react to the news that Caleb Love will not play for Michigan Wolverines basketball this coming season due to an apparent issue with admissions. We then play ‘fact or fiction’ on a number of topics surrounding the upcoming Michigan football season.

This is the second consecutive offseason in which Michigan has seemingly lost a transfer due to a hangup with admissions, though the situations are different. Terrence Shannon Jr., a Texas Tech transfer who would up at Illinois, appeared close to committing before there were problems with admissions.

There had been rumors surrounding Love and him possibly not qualifying for weeks.

“This is not all that surprising, based on what we heard from talking to both sides — people at Michigan and at North Carolina,” Balas said. “There’s a policy in the Big Ten at a lot of schools that you can’t have 85 percent of your credits at one school and get 15 percent at yours and then get your degree. So you better be a graduate or a freshman. That’s why we’ve always said it.

“I remember talking to John Beilein, Michigan’s former coach, about it, and I asked, ‘Was it understood?’ And he said, ‘Yes, this is not a Michigan-only policy. This is a policy at a lot of schools in the Big Ten — probably a lot of the better ones — and he said, ‘So, what we would do is we would run it by admissions first and say, hey, is this guy going to get in, and here’s his transcript. And if he wouldn’t, then they’d stop pursuing him. Even if he wanted to commit, they’d say, ‘Wait, we don’t want to put it out there that you’re committed and then go through this whole charade where, OK, now you’re not going to be here. We want to know up front.’

“I have an inkling that Michigan had a pretty good idea. But maybe [head coach] Juwan Howard and his staff thought maybe they’d make an exception for him given the state of the program and things like that, but obviously it didn’t work out. But it was pretty clear. We’d been hinting to it, if you’ve been on the message boards, for how many weeks now?”

We break down what’s next for Michigan basketball and get into football topics. You can watch or listen to the full show below.
