By the numbers: Michigan coming off its first three-score loss to unranked opponent since...

It wasn’t shocking that Michigan Wolverines football lost as 2.5-point underdogs to USC last weekend in Los Angeles, but falling by three scores — 31-13 — was surprising.
That was only the fourth time Michigan has been defeated by three scores over the last five seasons, joining last year’s setbacks against Texas (31-12) and Oregon (38-17) and the CFP semifinal versus Georgia in 2021 (34-11).
The only difference — this was an unranked opponent (though it’s worth noting that the Trojans now stand No. 20 in the Associated Press poll). Texas was a CFP semifinalist, Oregon went undefeated in the regular season and won the Big Ten and Georgia was the eventual national champion.
Michigan hasn’t lost to an unranked opponent by three scores since the 31-14 game against Kansas State in the Dec. 28, 2013 Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl in Tempe, Ariz. The Wolverines were coached by Brady Hoke in his third season, and he was fired following his fourth.
Under former Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh (2015-23), the Wolverines lost only five games against unranked opponents — versus Utah (24-17) in 2015, Iowa (14-13) in 2016, Michigan State (14-10) in 2017 and Michigan State (27-24) and Penn State (27-17) in 2020.
Much has been made this week about current head man Sherrone Moore’s 12-7 record during his 19-game tenure in the full-time job, but four of his five losses in 2024 came against ranked teams, including three that made the CFP, and the two this season were on the road at blue-blood institutions in Oklahoma and USC.
The only other non-top 25 team to beat Moore at Michigan, though, is Washington — this week’s opponent. The Huskies beat the Wolverines, 27-17, last season at Husky Stadium in Seattle, avenging the national championship game loss from the prior year.
Under Moore, Michigan is 3-2 when coming off a loss, with the setbacks coming at Illinois following the Washington game and at Indiana after the Oregon tilt in 2024. The Maize and Blue bounced back from a 24-13 defeat at Oklahoma earlier this fall, beating the brakes off of Central Michigan, 63-3, the following weekend.
Michigan is 3-0 at The Big House this season and 9-2 overall under Moore.
The Huskies, on the flip side, have struggled mightily on the road under the guidance of second-year head coach Jedd Fisch. They’re 2-5 and just picked up their first two road victories of the era this year, beating Washington State (59-24) and Maryland (24-20).

705 Rushing yards for junior running back Justice Haynes, who’s questionable to play after being hurt in last Saturday’s loss to Southern California, leading the Big Ten.
