Last season, Michigan football hosted Texas in week two, the eighth-ever time the Wolverines had hosted an SEC opponent. This weekend, the 15th-ranked Maize and Blue will travel to Norman to take on No. 18 Oklahoma, the first time in program history they’ll have played a true road game at an SEC team.

Saturday night’s clash is the 42nd occurrence of Michigan facing an SEC opponent, with the Wolverines holding a 27-13-1 record. The Wolverines have also had success recently, beating Alabama twice last calendar year — 27-20 in overtime of the College Football Playoff semifinal at the Rose Bowl Jan. 1 and 19-13 at the ReliaQuest Bowl Dec. 31. The Wolverines also lost to Texas, 31-12, at The Big House last September.

Michigan is 4-6 in its last 10 meetings versus the SEC, winning two out of the last three after a four-game skid. The Wolverines were dominated in three of those losses, falling to Florida 41-15, Alabama 35-16 and Georgia 34-11 in bowl games.

Here’s a look at Michigan’s last 10 games against the SEC:

Michigan and Oklahoma are two blue-blood programs. The Wolverines have 1,013 wins, the most by a football program at any level. Oklahoma, meanwhile, checks in sixth in college football with 951 victories after last week’s 35-3 win over Illinois State.

While the Wolverines and Sooners have been two of the most dominant teams in the sport, they’ve played each other just once, in the Jan. 1, 1976, Orange Bowl, a 14-6 Oklahoma win. The Sooners clinched their second-straight national championship with the victory over Michigan.

Michigan and Oklahoma will clash at 7:44 p.m. ET / 6:44 p.m. CT in Norman, meaning the Wolverines are opening the season with two-straight night games for the first time in program history. Michigan has fared well in primetime lately, winning 13-consecutive tilts that began after 5 p.m. local time. The Wolverines have won 18 of 20 such contests, including last weekend’s 34-17 triumph over New Mexico.

Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore spent the 2006-07 seasons as an offensive guard at Oklahoma under head coach Bob Stoops. He’s the first Wolverine head man to go up against his alma mater since Gary Moeller coached against Ohio State five times from 1990-94, going 3-1-1.

Moeller isn’t the only one to be in that situation — he’s one of four, soon to be five.

Bump Elliott actually went 1-5 against Purdue, where he played halfback. Fritz Crisler posted a 2-0 mark against University of Chicago, where he played from 1919-21.

Also of note, former U-M head coach Fielding H. Yost took down the school he attended, West Virginia, by a final score of 130-0 Oct. 22, 1904. U-M scored 43 points for each yard the Mountaineers amassed. That point total stands as the most Michigan has scored in a game, and it remains the only meeting between U-M and WVU.

By the numbers: Michigan vs. Oklahoma

2 Members of the Oklahoma backfield were ranked in the top five at their position groups in the transfer portal, according to the On3 Industry Rankings: John Mateer (No. 3 QB) and Jaydn Ott (No. 4 RB).

4-5 Is Brent Venables‘ record against top 25 opponents as Oklahoma’s head coach (2022-present). He’s 2-4 versus top 15 teams and 5-9 in one-score games.

16 Wins in the last 17 games in September for Michigan football. The Wolverines’ lone recent loss in the ninth month of the year came last season to Texas.

34 Passing yards allowed by Oklahoma to Illinois State in the season-opener, the fewest the Sooners have given up in a game since Kansas recorded 16 in a 34-19 OU win Oct. 19, 2013.

93 Receiving yards for Michigan senior tight end Marlin Klein against New Mexico. That total would’ve ranked second for former Michigan tight end Colston Loveland‘s distinguished career. Loveland was the No. 10 overall draft pick to the Chicago Bears this spring. His highest receiving yardage total in college came in last year’s 38-17 loss to Oregon (112).

392 Passing yards for Oklahoma in a 35-3 victory over Illinois State last weekend — all by Mateer — the most for the Sooners in a game since registering 400 in a 69-45 win over Texas Christian Nov. 24, 2023. The highest passing yardage total the Sooners had last season was 284.

452 Total yards for Michigan in a 34-17 season-opening win over New Mexico, its most since posting 492 versus UNLV in the third game of the 2023 season.

2,584 Career rushing yards for Ott, a California transfer. His best season came in 2023, when he rushed 245 times for 1,305 yards and 12 touchdowns, earning first-team All-Pac-12 honors.
