Michigan Wolverines football head coach Sherrone Moore has been fired, according to multiple reports, with ESPN being the first to report the news. Michigan confirmed the development with a statement from athletic director Warde Manuel.

Moore violated a university policy that led to his firing.

“U-M head football coach Sherrone Moore has been terminated, with cause, effective immediately,” Manuel said in a statement. “Following a University investigation, credible evidence was found that Coach Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. This conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy, and U-M maintains zero tolerance for such behavior.

“Biff Poggi has been appointed head football coach in an interim capacity, effective immediately.”

Moore just wrapped up his second regular season on the job, posting a 17-8 record. Two years is the shortest tenure for a Michigan head coach since Tad Wieman held the job for the same length from 1927-28.

The 39-year-old Moore took over as Michigan’s head coach in January 2024, hired by Manuel after Jim Harbaugh left for the NFL’s Los Angeles Chargers following his ninth season, which culminated in a 15-0 national championship season.

Poggi served as Michigan’s interim head coach for two games this season, guiding the Wolverines to wins over Central Michigan and Nebraska. He has served three different stints as Michigan’s associate head coach, twice under Harbaugh.

Poggi is 65 years old and a longtime former high school head coach who famously also started an immensely successful hedge fund. He played offensive lineman at Pittsburgh in the 1970s, before beginning coaching at the college and high school levels the following decade.

Notably, Poggi was the head coach of Charlotte from 2023-24, going 8-16 and getting fired less than two years into the job.
