Harbaugh spent nine seasons as Michigan’s head coach, going 89-25 with three Big Ten championships and a national title. At age 60, he departed Ann Arbor for the Los Angeles Chargers, who he led to the playoffs in 2024 after they won only five games the previous year.
“My love for Michigan, playing there and coming back to coach there, leaves a lasting impact. I’ll always be a loyal Wolverine,” the former Michigan coach said in a statement after accepting the Chargers job.

“I’m remarkably fortunate to have been afforded the privilege of coaching at places where life’s journey has created strong personal connections for me.”
Harbaugh was an All-American quarterback for the Wolverines in the 1980s, and his father, Jack Harbaugh, coached at Michigan in the 1970s. He spent nearly 20 years of his life in Ann Arbor.
The former Michigan coach has remained an avid follower and supporter of the program since heading back to the NFL, where he played for 15 seasons and coached for four with the San Francisco 49ers from 2011-14. Last year, he often discussed publicly big U-M victories and shared his excitement when his former Wolverine players have been picked in the NFL.
