Michigan Wolverines football played 13 different freshmen during the 2024 regular season. That group includes four who burned their redshirts by playing in more than four games.

The four who burned their redshirt year are linebacker Cole Sullivan (11 games), tight end Hogan Hansen (9), safety Mason Curtis (8) and cornerback Jo’Ziah Edmond (7).

Sullivan saw 14 snaps at linebacker, but most of his run came on special teams, where he played a role on the kickoff, kick return, punt return and punt coverage units.

Hansen, meanwhile, had an impact at tight end, due in part to Michigan suffering multiple injuries there throughout the course of the season, including to junior Colston Loveland for the finale at Ohio State. Hansen hauled in 6 passes for 68 yards and a touchdown in nine games on offense.

Curtis has been described by Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore as a “tackling machine.” The 6-foot-5, 200-pounder made 7 tackles, including 1 for loss, and notched his first career interception Nov. 23 against Northwestern.

Edmond entered Michigan’s two-deep at safety in the back half of the season. He played in seven outings on defense, notching 2 tackles.

Michigan has three other freshmen who went right up to the line of burning their redshirts but didn’t, playing in four regular-season games — EDGE Dominic Nichols, offensive lineman Jake Guarnera and running back Jordan Marshall. All four can see time in the bowl game and still maintain their redshirts.

If Marshall hadn’t dealt with a lower-body injury most of the season, he may have played in more than four games. The Wolverines used him as the primary kick returner in four contests, and he also got some playing time at running back in each of the last two clashes. He even had a fourth-quarter carry at Ohio State, going for 3 yards.

There are 12 Michigan freshmen, meanwhile, who haven’t seen the field at all to date. Here’s a look at every first-year college player on the roster and how many appearances and snaps they’ve played.
