Wolverines in the NFL: J.J. McCarthy — 'Nine' — puts on a show in primetime, playing at 'winning level'
Former Michigan Wolverines football quarterback J.J. McCarthy has experienced it all in his first season as a professional starter, after missing the 2024 campaign with a knee injury that required multiple surgeries.
The 6-foot-3, 219-pounder has been down with two separate injuries this year, a high-ankle sprain and concussion, but has started the last two games and led the Minnesota Vikings — whose playoff hopes have been dashed, with the team being eliminated — to back-to-back victories, over the Washington Commanders (31-0) and Dallas Cowboys (34-26).
In the victory over the Cowboys on Sunday Night Football, McCarthy completed 15 of his 24 passes for 250 yards and 2 touchdowns with 1 interception, rushing 4 times for 15 yards and a score that came on a fourth-and-goal where he faked out the entire defense and Griddy’d into the end zone.
“I did it in practice, and I was told not to do it,” McCarthy said. “So, just me being who I am, it’s like, ‘Oh, now I’m more enticed to do it.’ But if it’s that open, obviously just get in the end zone no matter what — and be coachable and do what my coach says. So yeah, I’ll definitely get a minus [grade] for that.”
McCarthy has flipped his mindset in recent weeks. Instead of focusing too much on, and overthinking, his footwork and fundamentals, he’s taking a one-play-at-a-time mentality and letting it ip.
“And even when we don’t hit them all,” head coach Kevin O’Connell said, “he’s making some really high-level throws, and I thought that was on full display.
“I was really, really proud of the way he threw the football. As a whole, he played at a winning, winning level, and he now has for the last eight quarters. And pair that with guys doing some good things around him, and we’re starting to function a little bit on offense.”
