Michigan Wolverines football is searching for a second starting cornerback to pair with star sophomore Will Johnson. While there are options on the team, the Maize and Blue are looking at the transfer portal, as well. Louisiana transfer Trey Amos is the newest target, having received an offer from Michigan Tuesday.

Amos, a 6-foot-1, 197-pound New Iberia, La., native, played three seasons with the Ragin’ Cajuns and has two years of eligibility remaining.

After entering the transfer portal Monday, Amos has also received offers from Alabama, Florida, Miami, Michigan State, LSU, Ole Miss, Illinois, Auburn, Oregon, Oklahoma, Texas A&M and Arkansas.

It’s notable that Florida quickly jumped into the mix, considering Gators head coach Billy Napier was the head coach at Louisiana when Amos signed with the program and during his first two seasons in Lafayette. Napier is entering his second season with Florida.

Amos is coming off a standout 2022 season. Playing in 11 games with 10 starts, he accumulated 35 tackles, 1 stop for loss and a team-high and career-best 8 pass breakups. According to PFF, Amos allowed 20 receptions for 423 yards and 2 touchdowns on 53 targets. Louisiana posted a 6-7 record in 2022, earning a trip to the Independence Bowl before losing to Houston, 23-16.

“My goal is to be an All-American,” Amos said before the 2022 season. “That’s the top goal. I’ve been writing down my goals; that’s the top one, and I’m working pretty hard on it every day in practice, surrounding myself with the right group of people to reach that.”

Amos had another productive campaign in 2021. The Michigan transfer target tallied 14 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and 5 pass breakups in 12 appearances (two starts) during his second collegiate season. He allowed 10 catches for 186 yards and no touchdowns on 28 targets, per PFF.

Amos’ first taste of college football came in 2020, amidst one of the most unique seasons in the sport’s history due to a global pandemic. He played in all 11 games, finishing the year with 10 tackles and an interception.

As a recruit, Amos was a three-star recruit and the No. 70 overall player in the state of Louisiana, per the On3 Industry Rankings.

Michigan offered multiple cornerback transfers during the December-January transfer portal period but didn’t come up with a commitment. As it stands now, top contenders for the starting job opposite Johnson are sophomore Amorion Walker, sophomore Myles Pollard and junior Ja’Den McBurrows.

Michigan has added eight transfers this offseason, including one from the Sun Belt in former Coastal Carolina EDGE Josaiah Stewart, a junior who went through winter conditioning and spring ball in Ann Arbor.
