“U-M head football coach Sherrone Moore has been terminated, with cause, effective immediately,” athletic director Warde Manuel said on Wednesday. “Following a University investigation, credible evidence was found that Coach Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. This conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy, and U-M maintains zero tolerance for such behavior.
“Biff Poggi has been appointed head football coach in an interim capacity, effective immediately.”

Moore just wrapped up his second regular season on the job, posting a 17-8 record. Two years is the shortest tenure for a Michigan head coach since Tad Wieman held the job for the same length from 1927-28.
The 39-year-old Moore took over as Michigan’s head coach in January 2024, hired by Manuel after Jim Harbaugh left for the NFL’s Los Angeles Chargers following his ninth season, which culminated in a 15-0 national championship season.
Poggi served as Michigan’s interim head coach for two games this season, guiding the Wolverines to wins over Central Michigan and Nebraska. He has served three different stints as Michigan’s associate head coach, twice under Harbaugh.
