Sherrone Moore Named Michigan Football's Next Head Coach

The Michigan Wolverines officially hired head coach Sherrone Moore on Friday evening, making him the 21st man to lead the program in school history. He replaces head coach Jim Harbaugh, who spent nine seasons with the program and left on Wednesday for the head coaching job with the Los Angeles Chargers.

Moore, the first African American head coach in the history of the program, is known as the team’s offensive coordinator/co-offensive line coach this past season, which was his sixth season working under Harbaugh. Moore has acted as Harbaugh’s right hand man over the last few seasons and is known as an ace recruiter and tireless worker in the building, playing one of the largest roles in Michigan’s climb to the mountain top over the last few years.

Moore served as the team’s tight ends coach in 2018-20 before taking over offensive line duties during a reshuffle for the 2021 season.

During the 2021 campaign, he also assumed co-offensive coordinator duties with Josh Gattis, who won the Broyles Award for his work with the program for his work with a 12-2 Big Ten Champion that beat Ohio State for the first time since 2011. After Gattis left for Miami (FL) in 2022, Moore shared offensive coordinator duties with then-quarterbacks coach Matt Weiss. He was named the sole offensive coordinator ahead of this season.

Head coaching duties were thrust upon him twice in 2023 with Harbaugh dealing with a pair of suspensions at the beginning and end of the regular season. Moore was the team’s acting head coach for the non-conference finale against Bowling Green and for the final three games of the regular season, which included top ten wins against Penn State and Ohio State and the program’s 1000th win in program history at Maryland on Nov. 18.

During his tenure as Michigan’s offensive line coach, Michigan won a pair of Joe Moore Awards in 2021 and 2022, which are given out to the best offensive line in the country. The position group was a driving force in the team’s three Big Ten Championships, three trips to the College Football Playoff and Rose Bowl and National Championship wins this season.

Sherrone Moore prior to Michigan

Prior to his time at Michigan, Moore spent four seasons at Central Michigan University working under then-head coach Dan Enos and was retained on John Bonamego’s staff during the coaching change in 2015. Ahead of the 2017 season, Moore was named CMU’s assistant head coach and recruiting coordinator in addition to tight end duties.

Moore got his coaching career started at Louisville in 2009-11 as a graduate assistant working with the offense before being named tight ends coach in 2012, a position he held through the 2013 season.

Moore played two seasons at Oklahoma as a guard and was a college teammate of star running back Adrian Peterson. He started his playing career at Butler County (Kansas) Community College.

Moore married his wife Kelli in 2015 and they have two daughters – Shiloah and Solei.
