NC State just added a priority defensive recruiting target to its 2023 class. Three-star linebacker Kelvon McBride from Mobile, Ala., who originally committed to Vanderbilt in June, flipped to the Wolfpack Friday afternoon Nov. 25.

McBride picked up an offer from NC State before his senior year and, while he was already interested in the program, he wanted to focus on his senior season before thinking about his recruitment. After his senior season wrapped up, he took a trip to Raleigh for an official visit.

“Their environment, the energy everybody had,” McBride said. “Even the players, you could tell that they’re good people. I was around them a lot.”

In the few months since receiving an offer from NC State, the 6-foot-3, 210-pound linebacker has built a good bond with defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Tony Gibson, who visited McBride for his senior night football game this fall.

“I think we’re building a good relationship,” McBride said. “When we met, he was like I am one of the top priorities for him right now. He said I was one of the first players he actually flew out to visit.”

McBride is a three-star prospect in the 2023 class, the On3 Consensus No. 93 linebacker nationally and the No. 39 recruit in Alabama. During his senior football season with Cottage Hill Christian, the linebacker recorded 78 total tackles and an interception over the course of 9 games.
