The Wolfpacker’s Friday Morning Newsstand
NC State women’s basketball pulled off an impressive 71-61 win over Miami Thursday night, snapping a two-game losing streak and defending home court. After the game, sophomore guard Saniya Rivers and graduate transfer forward Mimi Collins shared their thoughts on the high standards that follow the program.
Rivers acknowledged that both her and Collins, who arrived in Raleigh less than a year ago as transfers, feel the expectations to match the success of the past three years, which included several ACC tournament championships and an elite-8 appearance.
“I think we definitely felt the pressure a little bit, especially us just coming in this year,” Rivers said. “We knew what we were coming in to. We knew that we were coming in to play for a great program, a great coach with a great group of girls, but everybody wanted what this team has done the past three years.
“Everybody wants it, big target on our back. We’re a whole new team trying to figure it out, and I think tonight was a great first step in the right direction.”
Collins made it clear that, while they do recognize the expectations around the Wolfpack, they are ready ready to embrace those lofty goals.
“But don’t get me wrong, we do want it,” Collins said. “We love the pressure, we want it. I mean, this is why you come to these big schools. Trust me, we want it more than ever. I know the group of girls out there want it more than ever, and we want to get the four-peat especially for Camille [Hobby], [Jada Boyd] and [Jakia Brown-Turner], plus we want a ring for ourselves.”
