BREAKING: Wake Forest transfer wide receiver Wesley Grimes commits to NC State

After two seasons in Winston-Salem, Wake Forest transfer wide receiver Wesley Grimes decided to return home to Raleigh. The former Millbrook High star announced his decision to join NC State on through a social media post by 366Edits Friday evening. 

Grimes was the former No. 7 player in North Carolina as a four-star recruit, according to On3’s Industry rankings, when he originally committed to Wake Forest over the likes of NC State, Notre Dame and Tennessee among others. 

The wideout played in 19 games in his two seasons with the Demon Deacons, and he caught 24 passes for 372 yards with five touchdowns. He had a standout year this fall with 20 grabs for 339 yards and four scores. 

Grimes capped his sophomore season with three receptions for 31 yards and a career-best two touchdowns at Syracuse. He also logged three games with 50 yards or more through the air, including 76 in the Demon Deacon’s season-opening rout of Elon. 

Before his pair of seasons at Wake Forest, Grimes was a standout on the gridiron at Raleigh’s Millbrook High. He caught 87 passes for 1,594 yards and 26 touchdowns, which ranks third all-time in North Carolina single-season history. 

Grimes broke the school record for single-season receiving yards (1,594) and the career mark (2,836). He also logged 37 receptions for 691 yards and 11 touchdowns in seven games during the 2021 spring season after he logged 32 catches for 374 yards and two scores in 2019. 

The Raleigh native’s addition helps bolster the Wolfpack’s wide receiving corps, which lost five to the transfer portal at the conclusion of the regular season. NC State wideouts Anthony Smith, Porter Rooks, Terrell Timmons Jr., Joshua Crabtree and Chris Scott all departed once the transfer portal opened.

Grimes is the Wolfpack’s first transfer portal commitment of the cycle.

Based on TheWolfpacker.com’s count, the wide receiver’s decision to transfer brings NC State up to 75 scholarships for the 2024 season once the 21 Wolfpack prep commits officially join the program.
