Special teams coordinator Bill Busch will take over as NU’s defensive coordinator for the remainder of the season.

“We appreciate Erik and the work and dedication he has given to our football program,” Joseph said in a statement. “At this time, I feel that it is in the best interest of the Nebraska Football program to take the leadership of the defense in another direction and decided Bill Busch will take over as defensive coordinator.”

The Huskers allowed 94 points and 1,222 yards in back-to-back losses to Georgia Southern and Oklahoma.

They currently rank dead last in the Big Ten in scoring defense (35.5 points per game), total defense (514.0 yards per game), rushing defense (233.5 ypg), and sacks (4), and they’re 13th in passing defense (285.3 ypg).

Busch has served as a defensive coordinator at Rutgers (co-coordinator) in 2017, Utah State in 2009-10, and Northern Arizona (co-coordinator) in 1996. In his most recent stint with the Scarlet Knights, Busch helped RU rank sixth nationally in red zone defense (72.7%) and 18th in passing defense (186.5 ypg).
