After being picked 12th in the 2023-24 preseason Big Ten projections, Nebraska blew its expectations out of the water with 22 wins and a third-place finish in the conference.

As a result, NU head coach Fred Hoiberg rightfully received his due.

On Tuesday morning, Hoiberg was named the Big Ten Co-Coach of the Year during the league’s season awards show. He shared the honor with Purdue’s Matt Painter. It’s the first time since 2015 that the award has co-winners.

At 22-9 overall and 12-8 in conference play, the Huskers posted their highest Big Ten finish and matched their second-best record in program history.

Along with the impressive record, Nebraska averaged 76.8 points per game, marking their highest scoring average since 1995-96. It also ranked in the top 50 nationally in offensive and defensive efficiency for the first time since ’96-97, per KenPom.

That helped NU record two top-10 victories this season, including its first-ever upset of a No. 1 opponent since 1982. It was just the sixth time the Huskers have knocked off two top-10 foes in the same season.

As impressive as anything, Nebraska accomplished all that with no players ranked among the Big Ten’s top-20 scoring leaders or inside the top 25 in minutes played.
