Nebraska interim head coach Mickey Joseph is among those being considered for Arizona State’s head coaching vacancy, HuskerOnline has learned.

The Sun Devils fired Herm Edwards on Sept. 18 and named Shaun Aguano as their interim head coach. Aguano has gained popularity in the ASU fan base similar to the way Joseph has done at Nebraska.

Arizona State’s coaching search has been quiet, too

Just like the Nebraska job, no definitive names have emerged as leading candidates at Arizona State. It’s been a quiet search.

However, HuskerOnline has confirmed that there has been contact between Joseph’s representation (Atlanta-based law firm Kilpatrick Townsend) and an entity directly tied to ASU’s coaching search.

Joseph became Nebraska’s interim head coach after Scott Frost was fired Sept. 11. The Huskers still have four games remaining on their schedule. They are 2-3 under Joseph’s leadership with losses to Oklahoma, Purdue and Illinois.

It’s unclear what Joseph would have to do to land the Nebraska job permanently. According to a source, no parameters have been established in that regard.

During Nebraska’s bye week, Joseph was in both Atlanta and the Phoenix area. In Phoenix, he recruited with offensive line coach Donovan Raiola. Joseph also spent time with his brother Vance Joseph, who serves as defensive coordinator of the Arizona Cardinals.

Joseph’s wife, Priscilla, is also originally from the state of Arizona.

It should be noted that Arizona State is under NCAA investigation for alleged recruiting violations during the pandemic. What’s more, the Pac-12 is on shaky ground. Those elements combine to diminish the prestige of the ASU job.

Oregon offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham has been the name most prominent in speculation for the ASU job.

The Sun Devils are now one of eight FBS programs seeking a head coach, joining Auburn, Nebraska, Charlotte, Colorado, Georgia Tech, UAB and Wisconsin.
