Nebraska Football Will Host Former 5-stars As Cornhuskers Aim To Secure Portal Qb And Skill Needs

Nebraska’s coaching staff will play host to a pair of high-profile transfer-portal prospects this week, as Ohio State quarterback Kyle McCord and Buckeyes wideout Julian Fleming are set to visit Lincoln.

Derek McCord — Kyle McCord’s father — confirmed the news Sunday.

He declined to say exactly when Kyle will visit and how many visits to campuses that Kyle will make. The father said last week that Nebraska is among several schools that would be a good fit for his son.

“We’re just trying to take it day by day right now,” said Derek McCord, a quarterback for Rutgers from 1988 to 1992. “I’ll confirm he’s visiting Lincoln, but that’s all I’d like to confirm at this time.”

This season, in leading Ohio State to an 11-1 record, the 6-foot-3, 215-pound Kyle McCord was 229-for-348 passing (65.8%) for 3,170 yards and 24 touchdowns, with six interceptions.

Meanwhile, the 6-2, 210-pound Fleming caught 26 passes for 270 yards (10.4 ypc) this season. In four seasons with the Buckeyes, he made 79 receptions for 963 yards (12.2 ypc) and seven touchdowns. He was a five-star recruit coming out of Southern Columbia High School in Catawissa, Pennsylvania.

McCord is among a group of quarterbacks with whom Nebraska offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield met during the past week. The list also included Blake Shapen of Baylor, who announced Friday he’s bound for Mississippi State. Sam Leavitt, a freshman for Michigan State, expressed interest in Nebraska after meeting with Satterfield on Monday.

McCord, though, is the first transfer-portal quarterback in this go-round known to have a visit to Nebraska scheduled. There’s also buzz about Miami (Florida) having a shot to land McCord.

Nebraska this season used three different starting quarterbacks — junior Jeff Sims and sophomores Chubba Purdy and Heinrich Haarberg — while finishing 5-7 (3-6 Big Ten) in Matt Rhule’s first season as Husker head coach.

Nebraska led the nation in turnovers with 31 and ended up minus-17 in the turnover category for the season. The three Husker QBs combined for 16 interceptions and nine fumbles lost.

Sims is expected to enter the portal in coming days, according to On3’s Pete Nakos.
