Newsstand: Former Notre Dame DT Jacob Lacey picks transfer destination

Former Notre Dame defensive tackle Jacob Lacey has picked his next destination. Lacey, who left the team and entered the transfer portal in early October, announced his commitment to Oklahoma Thursday. He will have two years of eligibility to play for the Sooners starting in 2023.
Lacey made 5 tackles and had 2 sacks in four games this year, with both sacks coming in the Irish’s Sept. 17 win over Cal. He played 24 snaps in that game and 29 in the opener at Ohio State. He logged just 9 one week after his 2-sack game, though, and declared his transfer intentions days later. He made the decision after four games to preserve a redshirt and an extra season of eligibility.
In Lacey, Notre Dame lost a four-year rotation player when healthy. His absence elevated sophomore Gabriel Rubio into a larger role. Rubio has played double-digit snaps in five of the seven games since Lacey left.

Lacey is one of two Notre Dame players to depart the team in-season, with wide receiver Joe Wilkins Jr.’s Nov. 7 exit being the other. Both players were grad transfers, which allowed them to enter the portal at any time instead of needing to wait until the transfer window opens Dec. 5. Wilkins has not announced a new school.
