Hyde on the 2022 receiver room

Notre Dame has just eight scholarship wide receivers currently on the roster, and a big storyline heading into the season will be the lack of depth.

“When you (ask about) Mr. Reliable, you have to go with Avery Davis once he gets back,” Hyde said. “I’m saying reliable when it comes to experience with him. He’s going to be a two-time captain more than likely, when he’s been there, he’s had some big time catches for Notre Dame the last couple of years.”

Both Hyde and Singer discussed the big question with Davis, which is how is his recovery from an ACL tear going and how will it impact 2022? That remains to be determined.

Next, Hyde turned to the another bit of news surrounding wide receivers with knee injuries.

“The fact that (Joe) Wilkins is back so soon, I think that was probably the hidden gem of Day 1, that Marcus Freeman said he’s out there, no brace and running full speed,” Hyde added. “But when you’re saying the best of the group, the one you have to get the football to this season, it’s Lorenzo Styles.

“Styles has to take that jump from solid and played a bunch last year to upper-echelon sophomore, and there’s been a big history of Notre Dame guys (making a big jump from) freshman to sophomore.”

Hyde concluded with in a little tight end talk, as another question on the Irish offense is who will be the No. 2 tight end after the departure of George Takacs to Boston College?

“If a second tight end does not emerge behind (Michael) Mayer, more wide receivers are going to have to play.”

Notre Dame is set to have six scholarship tight ends on the roster, including Mayer and two true freshmen. The second spot is ripe for the taking.
