On Monday, Notre Dame completed its months-long athletics director transition. Pete Bevacqua officially took the reigns as AD, while Jack Swarbrick stepped down after 15 years and became athletics director emeritus.

Shortly before Swarbrick’s final day as the leader of Notre Dame athletics, he sat down for an interview with CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd. They mostly discussed the broader state of college sports, but Dodd did ask about the Fighting Irish football program and its direction under third-year head coach Marcus Freeman.

“I think it is as well positioned as anytime in my time here,” Swarbrick said. “I think Marcus has assembled the best staff during my time here. I don’t think anybody has a defensive [Al Golden] and offensive coordinator [Mike Denbrock] combination better than ours. Marcus has always been a phenomenal recruiter.”

Swarbrick hired Freeman after former Irish head coach Brian Kelly left for LSU, and he remains confident Freeman can take the program where it needs to go.

Quote of the day

“You look at some of these other programs that are having success, continuity is the key. If we can keep this group together, keep adding key pieces that supplement this group, that make each other better, we can keep making jumps. We can keep getting better. So I’m excited to have a group back. I’m excited to go into practice and say something and people know what I’m talking about. That’s gonna be so much fun, to say a drill and everybody can just go to a place and know what we’re doing. Continuity is king in college basketball.”
