Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman is a finalist for the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award, the Irish announced Tuesday.

Freeman is one of 12 finalists for the honor, alongside James Madison’s Bob Chesney, Indiana’s Curt Cignetti, Ohio State’s Ryan Day, Texas A&M’s Mike Elko, Virginia’s Tony Elliott, Vanderbilt’s Clark Lea, Kennesaw State’s Jerry Mack, Texas Tech’s Joey McGuire, UConn’s Jim Mora, Georgia’s Kirby Smart and Tulane’s Jon Sumrall.

Freeman won several coach of the year honors in 2024, though the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award was not one of them. He was named the Bear Bryant Coach of the Year, Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year, George Munger Coach of the Year, College Football Coach of the Year (NCMFC), Ted Ginn Sr. Coach of the Year (NAAA) and the AFCA Good Works Team Coach of the Year last season.

In 2025, Freeman led the Irish to their third-straight double-digit-win season but fell just short of the College Football Playoff.

Quote of the day

“But we were just led to believe all season long, if we took care of business, we were going to be in. And then to have that, that shock, that surprise on Sunday in that room with those kids who have given everything that they have since August to put themselves in that position. To be told week in and week out that you’re in that position, provided you win. And we certainly won when you think about these last 10 weeks.

“And it just boggles my mind that when we got off that plane that Sunday morning in snowy South Bend after the Stanford game, that that was it. And that’s not the way this season deserved to end with the performance of our football team.”
