Newsstand: Notre Dame QB CJ Carr added to Freshman of the Year Watch List

Notre Dame quarterback CJ Carr is a midseason addition to the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Watch List, the Irish announced Tuesday. The end-of-season award honors the top freshman in college football.
Carr, a redshirt freshman, is 86-of-127 (67.7 percent) for 1,280 yards (10.1 yards per attempt), 11 touchdowns and 2 interceptions so far this season. That yards per attempt ranks sixth in college football, and he’s ninth in passing efficiency as well at 177.8.
Carr leads all freshman quarterbacks in every relevant passing statistic. He and the 3-2 Irish are back in action at 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday when they take on NC State in South Bend.

Quote of the day
“On offense you have to anticipate what you think somebody’s going to do. We have to anticipate what we’ve seen on film. What we’re going to show, this is what we anticipate the defense to do. (Boise State) didn’t really do what we exactly thought they were going to do. It’s not that we’ve never seen that look. They didn’t do exactly what we thought they were going to do with the play action we did with that play.
“As you look at it now, looking back at it, you would say, let’s try to keep it inside. But as we prepared for that, we thought it was going to hit right there in that C-D gap. There were a lot of people in that C- and D-gap that we didn’t expect to be there. They got us. We’ve got to come back and have a better plan that ensures that we do. Like it’s not OK. I’m not justifying that. That’s just what happened. We’ve got to ensure that we have a plan that no matter what they do defensively, we can score in that situation. I’m confident we will.”
