Notre Dame quarterback CJ Carr and running back Jeremiyah Love were named finalists for multiple national honors this week, the Irish and the awards themselves announced.

Carr is a finalist for the Manning Award (honoring the best quarterback college football) and the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award (self-explanatory). Love is a finalist for the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award, which is given to college football’s top player.

The junior running back is also a finalist for the Maxwell Award and considered a strong contender for the Heisman Trophy, both of which also go to the most outstanding player in the sport.

In his first regular season as a starter, Carr finished tied for third nationally and first in the Power Four in yards per attempt with 9.4. He threw for 2,741 yards, 24 touchdowns and 6 interceptions, good for a pass efficiency rating of 168.06 (fifth in the country).

Love, meanwhile, broke the single-season program record for total touchdowns with 21 and tied the record for rushing touchdowns with 18. He passed Jerome Bettis for the former and tied Audric Estimé for the latter. Love rushed for 1,372 yards and compiled 1,652 yards from scrimmage, which ranked fourth and third in the country, respectively.

While Carr has another season before he’s eligible for the NFL Draft, it is possible we’ve seen Love’s final game in a blue-and-gold uniform. He is almost certain to declare for the draft in December or January, depending on whether the Irish make the College Football Playoff or not.

Quote of the day

“This is my first recruiting class, but I would think, like, even in the [NFL] draft, it’s like, ‘OK, these are the guys we want to target, but later on, there’s a little bit of a, ‘Well, we’ll settle for this.’ I don’t really feel like we settled anywhere.”
