Notre Dame football cost itself three spots in the latest Associated Press Poll with its 27-24 loss to Miami on Sunday night.

On Tuesday, the Irish slotted at No. 9 in the Week 2 rankings after opening the season at No. 6. The Hurricanes climbed five spots to No. 5. And Notre Dame’s next opponent, Texas A&M, ranks No. 19. The Irish take on the Aggies on Sept. 13 at Notre Dame Stadium at 7:30 p.m. ET (NBC-TV).

Besides the Aggies, voters omitted Notre Dame’s other 10 opponents from the Week 2 AP Poll, though Southern Cal received 64 votes and Navy and Pittsburgh received 2 votes each. Last season, ND beat No. 20 Texas A&M, 23-13, in Week 1 in College Station, Texas.

The Irish rank third among teams with losses behind Texas and Clemson. The No. 7 Longhorns lost 14-7 on the road against No. 1 Ohio State; No. 8 Clemson fell 28-20 at home to No. 3 LSU. Alabama, at No. 21, is the only other one-loss team in the Week 2 rankings.

Although Notre Dame slid in the Week 2 rankings, it would still be alive in the College Football Playoff in a hypothetical scenario. The Irish would face Clemson on the road in the first round in an No. 8 vs. No. 9 matchup.

Last season, Notre Dame did not let a Week 2 upset to Northern Illinois stop it from contending for a championship. Marcus Freeman’s team rallied the rest of the season, securing the No. 5 spot in the College Football Playoff rankings, which are determined to set the postseason matchups. The Irish eventually played in the national championship game.

Earlier on Tuesday, Notre Dame claimed the No. 9 slot in the USA TODAY coaches poll.
