Notre Dame football show: Exclusive Joe Alt interview + spring ball breakdown

On Wednesday night, outgoing Notre Dame offensive tackle Joe Alt joined Blue & Gold’s YouTube live show with Mike Singer and Tim Hyde to discuss a number of topics, which included his thoughts on the three offensive tackles who are battling for two starting spots.

The Irish’s 2021 offensive line class was one for the books, as it was headlined by Alt, who very well may be a top-10 overall draft pick and the first offensive tackle off the board. Alt declared for the NFL Draft after three seasons in South Bend, as did Blake Fisher, who projects as a mid-round pick.

As difficult as it’ll be to replace both Alt and Fisher, Notre Dame has three talented players competing at tackle. And Alt broke down each of them during his live show interview with Blue & Gold.

Rising sophomore Charles Jagusah: “The two main things with him are his athleticism at his size and his mental approach to the game. Getting to know him and see how he works — it’s similar to me … He has that athletic ability and mirrors guys in pass pro. He’s strong in the run game; he’s going to be very effective there. I was very happy with everything I saw. I tried to instill as much wisdom in him as I could while I was there. He had a heck of a game in the Sun Bowl. That was a lot of fun to watch.”

Graduate student Tosh Baker: “Tosh and I are very close; we’ve been close since I got there. We have pretty much the same body type. It’s been really fun to play with Tosh and get to know him more on a personal level. He has all the ability with his length and size and also his speed and athleticism. He’s going to be a great run blocker and even better in the pass game.”

Rising junior Aamil Wagner: “Aamil is probably the fastest and most athletic guy on the offensive line. It’s funny — you’ll see him flying across the field to cut off the safety when blocking backside of a zone scheme. He brings an effort level to the game that’s really impressive. When he continues to get bigger and stronger, he’s going to be one heck of a player.”
