Newsstand: Notre Dame football legacy recruit racks up three major honors this season

Notre Dame defensive line commit Richie Flanigan, the No. 272 overall player in the 2027 class, has some pretty good genes.
Also, the Rivals Industry Ranking’s No. 32 defensive lineman nationally and the No. 3 player in Wisconsin, Flanigan, is a four-star recruit and the son of former Fighting Irish defensive lineman Jim Flanigan. His father developed into a third-round NFL Draft pick after an impactful four-year ND career from 1990-93.
Richie’s brother, James Flanigan, is a freshman tight end at Notre Dame and one of the top recruits in his class. According to the Rivals Industry Ranking, James was the No. 131 overall player, No. 7 tight end nationally and the No. 1 prospect in Wisconsin in 2025.
At Green Bay (Wis.) Notre Dame de la Baie Academy, Richie has added a new piece to the Flanigan name.
This season, the 6-foot-3, 265-pound Flanigan earned three major honors. On Wednesday, the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association named him its Lineman of the Year among large schools in the state. He also earned all-state recognition on both the offensive and defensive lines.
During his junior season, Flanigan has become a catalyst for a Tritons team that has gone 14-0 and will play for a state championship. He has totaled 42 tackles, including 23 solo stops, 7 for loss and 4 sacks, and also has a fumble recovery.

NDA will look to lean on him again Friday against fellow 13-0 West De Pere (Wis.) High in the Wisconsin Division 2 state championship game. The Tritons are seeking back-to-back titles. Last year, they beat Waukesha (Wis.) Catholic Memorial and Irish O-lineman Owen Strebig 49-28 in the final. This year’s game kicks off at 2:30 p.m. ET at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison.
