“To be — in his fifth game coming up — where he’s at is rare. Performing at the level he’s playing at is rare. But CJ Carr is rare. He’s blessed with great talent and has the unique trait that very few people have — he’s a competitive, selfless individual. It’s not about CJ Carr … Whatever it takes to win, he has that trait. And he’s mature in the way he prepares … It leads to improvement and really good results on Saturdays.”

He says Notre Dame faking a punt up 29 points in the second half at Arkansas was about the Irish, not about rubbing it in the Razorbacks’ faces.

“I felt like it was the right time to send a message to our team…There is no taking your foot off the accelerator.”

“You never want to see someone in any profession lose his job…But this is the profession we chose.”

Freeman says he wishes Pittman the best.

“The bumpy road leads to better as long as you work, attack it and own it. I haven’t been in the fire [before] with Chris Ash. I’ve learned who he is in the fire — he’s a competitor, leader and isn’t pointing fingers at other people. He’s saying that ‘I’ have to get things fixed. He’s done a really good job of being crystal clear of his expectations … He hasn’t wavered. He goes to work, and I’ve learned a lot about him these past two weeks.”

“Elijah plays extremely hard. He may not be as big as other tackles, but he plays hard and that’s rewarded. He’s become more consistent. He makes up for his size physically with his aggression and how hard he plays.”

Irish head coach Marcus Freeman is loving up the Fighting Irish offensive line for CJ Carr’s stat line of 11-of-14, 167 yards, 2 TD, 0 INT vs. the blitz at Arkansas.

“There is no great quarterback without protection.”

“Every single play is important. If any of our guys had the mindset of ‘this is garbage time’ then they don’t understand that they’re being evaluated the same way starters are. We hold our second group the same way we hold our starters to. Our second group on offense played extremely better than the week before.”

“We have multiple people who have multiple roles in the booth. The pros of being an on the field coordinator are being able to lead and have face-to-face communication with the coaches and players. The only way to be on the field is having comfort that the people in the booth are getting you need to see … You have to be supported with who is up there.”

Freeman noted the con of not being in the booth is things you can’t see in the field that you can only see in the booth.

Freeman said he has a lot of respect for Boise State head coach Spencer Danielson and quarterback Maddux Madsen.

“Experienced. Tough. Gritty. Takes care of the ball.”

“There is no secret formula. It’s always the hard work that you have to put in … I want to say I’m surprised, but I’m not … We have to get back to work. We have another great challenge on Saturday against Boise State.”

Freeman adds that Boise State is a high-pressure attacking defense.

CB Leonard Moore (left ankle) remains questionable this week as Notre Dame prepares for Boise State.

DT Donovan Hinish (left shoulder) and DE/special teamer Preston Zinter (concussion) are also questionable.
