Notre Dame redshirt freshman quarterback CJ Carr had a sensational outing last Saturday, helping lead the Fighting Irish to a 56-13 triumph. He completed 22 of 30 passes for 354 yards and 4 touchdowns. He was sacked just once and had a quarterback rating of 216.5 on the afternoon.

Through four games, Carr has completed 71 of 104 passes (68.3 percent) for 1,091 yards (272.8 per game) with 9 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. It appears that he’s now caught national attention.

He was picked by the Davey O’Brien Great 8 for his Week 5 performance against the Razorbacks. He’s now a member of the award’s Midseason Watch List as part of his selection. The Davey O’Brien Award honors the nation’s top college quarterback.

Carr leads all freshmen nationally in yards per attempt (10.49 – fifth among all FBS players), yards per completion (15.37 – sixth among all FBS players), passing efficiency (181.1 – 10th among all FBS players), and passing yards per game (272.8 – 20th among all FBS players).

The Davey O’Brien National Quarterback of the Week, selected from the Great 8 list, will be revealed Tuesday at 11 a.m. (CT).

The Davey O’Brien Foundation was created in 1977, and the National Quarterback Award, the oldest and most prestigious college quarterback award, was first issued in 1981. Over its time, the Davey O’Brien Foundation has given away more than $1.3 million in scholarships and university grants to help high school and college athletes transform leadership on the field into leadership in life.

In 1938, O’Brien, who wore No. 8 as a star quarterback for TCU, became the first player ever to win the Heisman Trophy, Maxwell Award and Walter Camp Award in the same year. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1955.

Quote of the day

“To be – this is his fifth game coming up. To be where he’s at, it’s rare. It’s rare to be a second-year college football player playing in your fifth game and performing at a level he’s performing at. It’s rare, but I think CJ Carr is rare. “
