On June 17, Washington (Okla.) High class of 2025 tight end Nate Roberts announced his commitment to Notre Dame, and less than two months later, he’s already backed off his pledge.

Interestingly enough, Roberts told On3 that he picked the Irish over Ohio State and Clemson, but he’s now projected to end up choosing the local Oklahoma Sooners.

Roberts sent a statement to On3 concerning his decommitment:

“I have made the decision to decommit from the University of Notre Dame. I want to thank Coach [Marcus] Freeman, Coach [Gerad] Parker, and Chad Bowden for the opportunity and wish them and the Fighting Irish the best going forward.”

Roberts ranks as the nation’s No. 134 overall player and No. 2 tight end in the country. according to the 2025 On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

On3’s own rankings view Roberts as a three-star prospect, the No. 246 prospect and No. 11 tight end in America.

Notre Dame now has two commitments in the 2025 class in Miami Belen Jesuit Prep interior defensive lineman Davion Dixon and Tampa (Fla.) Jesuit running back Justin Thurman.

Do the Irish already have Roberts’ replacement lined up? It’s certainly possible, as Blue & Gold logged a prediction for Green Bay (Wis.) Notre Dame De La Baie Academy’s James Flanigan, the No. 200 prospect and No. 7 tight end per the 2025 On3 Industry Ranking, to choose the Irish. Notre Dame offered the son of former Irish defensive lineman Jim Flanigan back in March.

Notre Dame has a class of 2024 tight end commitment from Charlotte (N.C.) Catholic’s Jack Larsen, the No. 468 prospect and No. 31 tight end in the land according to the On3 Industry Ranking. Larsen committed to the Irish back in the summer of 2022 and has remained locked in with his pledge.

In leading Washington High to an undefeated record and a 2022 Oklahoma 2A state championship, Roberts caught 33 passes for 705 yards with 11 touchdowns. He had 324 yards after catch.

Roberts was named to The Oklahoman‘s 2022 Little All-City first-team offense. He also stars on the Washington High baseball team.

Roberts is the younger brother of Jake Roberts, a 2020 three-star tight end that signed with North Texas out of high school. Jake transferred to Baylor in the offseason.

Oklahoma leads for Roberts at 83 percent according to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine (RPM).
