Notre Dame QB signee Noah Grubbs leads Lake Mary to last-second Florida 7A state championship victory

On Dec. 8, I published an article titled “Doubt Notre Dame QB signee Noah Grubbs at your own risk” with a focus on how impressive it was for the future Irish signal-caller to lead his Lake Mary (Fla.) High squad to the Florida 7A state championship game.

Lake Mary was expected to win its first two games of the 7A playoffs — the highest classification in the Sunshine State. But on Nov. 28, Lake Mary ran into the No. 1 team in the bracket, Deland. According to the Massey ratings, Lake Mary was predicted to fall 41-30, but Grubbs led his squad to a 40-31 triumph.

In last year’s 7A state championship game, Grubbs and his Lake Mary squad were blown out by Venice (Fla.) High. But in the 2025 semifinals, Grubbs’ squad got their revenge, winning 31-26. Grubbs completed 23 of 34 passes for 309 yards with 2 touchdowns and zero interceptions in the contest. He also added a goal line rushing touchdown. Lake Mary was predicted to lose 34-28.

On Saturday night, the Irish quarterback signee’s team was predicted to lose 34-28 once again, this time in the state championship game against Vero Beach (Fla.) High.

And again, doubt Grubbs at your own risk. And if you did so, you look silly right about now.

With just a few seconds remaining in the game, down 27-21, Grubbs tossed a Hail Mary pass that was tipped by a Vero Beach defender, caught by Florida International wide receiver signee Barrett Schultz, and then lateraled to 2028 receiver Tavarius Brundidge, who scored to give Lake Mary the win after a successful extra point attempt.

And with that, Notre Dame quarterback signee Noah Grubbs has ended his incredible high school career capped off with a state championship.

It should be noted that Grubbs is the lone Power Four conference recruit on the Lake Mary squad.

Notre Dame is getting a good one in Grubbs. He’s ranked as the No. 405 overall player and No. 28 quarterback per the 2026 Rivals Industry Ranking. While he’s a three-star prospect, I’ll say once again: Doubt him at your own risk.

From Rivals’ Andy Villamarzo: Lake Mary beats Vero Beach on final play

MIAMI, Fla.- It’s been 44 year since Vero Beach last won a Florida high school football state championship. For 47 minutes and 50 seconds, they controlled their fate to win their second ever title.

The Lake Mary capped one of the wildest endings to a high school football state championship game, beating Vero Beach on a last second heave by Notre Dame signee Noah Grubbs, coming away with the improbable 28-27 win Saturday night at Pitbull stadium for the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) Class 7A state championship.

Lake Mary won its first-ever state championship in program history.

The sequence that led to Grubbs’ game-tying touchdown was Vero Beach was facing a fourth down with just around 20 seconds remaining in the game. The Indians opted to run the ball out of the back of the endzone with Florida State signee Efrem White taking a safety, making it 27-21 Indians.

With only 10 seconds left in the game, the Indians decided to squib kick the ensuing kickoff to midfield with around six seconds remaining instead of driving the ball downfield.

Grubbs on the final play would throw a pass downfield, which was deflected into the waiting hands of Barrett Schulz (FIU signee), who handed it to Tavarius Brundridge Jr., who took it in from three yards out for the tie with time expiring. The following extra point make won the Rams the game, concluding the wildest contest of the FHSAA high school football finals.

The Fighting Indians opened things up with a bang as Monds connected on a 80-yard touchdown pass to White (189 all-purpose yards, three total touchdowns) to go up 7-3 after a Lake Mary field goal make.

Turnovers became an issue for Notre Dame signee Noah Grubbs (333 yards, three touchdowns), as he threw two first-half interceptions that doomed multiple potential scoring drives for the Rams. Both of Grubbs’ picks were by Florida State signee Jordan Crutchfield. Crutchfield ended the game with three interceptions of Grubbs on the night.

White didn’t just play receiver for the Fighting Indians as the future Seminole threw a 79-yard touchdown to Marcus Melbourne to put Vero Beach ahead 14-3. Monds (200 passing yards) and crew weren’t done yet as the sophomore added a 50-yard scoring strike to Xavier Stintson to make it 21-3 going into halftime.

Grubbs would keep the Rams within striking distance in the fourth quarter as the quarterback was named the game’s Most Valuable Player.
