Notre Dame LB commit Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa reflects on decision

Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco class of 2024 linebacker Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa gave somewhat of a surprising commitment to Notre Dame back on July 23, as most had him pegged to Ohio State. USC — the local school — was also under close consideration.
Since making his commitment, Viliamu-Asa hasn’t been too active in giving interviews. However, he spoke with Max Torres of DucksDigest.com, the Fan Nation Oregon website, earlier this week during practice.
Viliamu-Asa, who ranks as the nation’s No. 110 overall player and No. 9 linebacker per the 2024 On3 Industry Ranking, reflected on his decision to pick the Irish.
“I felt that it was the best choice for my long-term future,” Viliamu-Asa told Torres. “I was able to get the best of both worlds on and off the field. Regardless of what I do in football, I’ll be able to achieve my dreams off the field.”
In the several days leading up to his decision date, Viliamu-Asa was on a church retreat where he sought guidance on making his final choice. His faith helped guide him to make his decision.
“It had a lot to do with it,” Viliamu-Asa added. “I spent a lot of months praying and looking for God’s will for my life. I feel like he led me to Notre Dame.”
The Notre Dame staff also had a big impact on Viliamu-Asa’s decision to pick the Irish, and he cherishes being recruited by them.
“It’s a blessing; it’s a really family-oriented staff,” he said, “They make sure to develop a great relationship with you and your family. They have great energy and make sure you feel the family culture at Notre Dame.

“I love the culture there. They’ve built a contagious culture of excellence that promotes success on and off the field. They make sure their players care about players what they’re doing in the classroom just as much as what they do on the field. That’s what I’m all about and feel passionate about. I’m excited.”
Viliamu-Asa finished 2022 with 111 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, 2 fumble recoveries and 1 interception. That’s about as good of a season as an inside linebacker could hope for from a personal standpoint, and from a team aspect, he helped lead St. John Bosco to a 13-1 record last fall that resulted in a CIF Open Division state title and being crowned MaxPreps national champions.
But he has still has more he wants to improve on personally before enrolling early at Notre Dame.
“I’m working sure I know every spot — trying to play every position I can,” he said. “I’m wanting to take a jump in my leadership as well — help the young guys.”
In the first game of his senior season, Viliamu-Asa led Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco (1-0) with 11 tackles and seven solo. He also had a sack in the 42-22 victory over Liberty (Nev.) High.
On Friday at 7 p.m. ET, his squad battles Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas in a road matchup between two national powerhouses.
