Newsstand: Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire takes veiled shot at Notre Dame

Notre Dame courted Texas Tech general manager James Blanchard in the offseason for the same position, but Blanchard opted to stay in Lubbock and got a hefty payday out of it.
But other than that, there’s no reason in this writer’s mind for Red Raiders head coach Joey McGuire — who hasn’t done so previously — to throw shade publicly at Notre Dame. However, during a press conference on Saturday after his squad knocked off BYU, he praised his opponent while taking a veiled shot at Notre Dame.
Well, “veiled” in the sense that he didn’t call out Notre Dame by name — but it’s clear who he was implying.
“I have so much respect for BYU,” McGuire said. “I do, man. I was really excited whenever they joined the Big 12 because I think they carry a lot of weight and a lot of respect. I have a lot of respect for them entering a conference and not playing an independent schedule like other people. Y’all already know who that is.
“So I have a lot of respect for that. They’re earning their right just like everybody but a couple of people in the nation. They’re earning their right through conference play, you know, and playing in some really tough places.”
Texas Tech knocked off BYU 29–7 at home, which will likely knock the Cougars down from their No. 7 spot, while the Red Raiders will likely move into that slot.

McGuire is likely arguing that BYU — now an 8–1 team — should remain above the No. 10 Notre Dame Fighting Irish. But that’s unlikely to happen.
On Saturday, Notre Dame faces the No. 24 Pittsburgh Panthers. Later tonight, the College Football Playoff Committee will announce a new top-25 ranking.

“JG is putting in so much work in trying to get that hamstring to where it needs to go, where it needs to be. Last week, we had to extract some blood from his hamstring just because part of the healing process is when some blood builds up, you’ve got to extract it and continue to get that muscle stronger.
“Mentally, he’s been in a good place. He’s as frustrated as anybody. He wants to be out there. So we’ve just got to, ‘Hey, keep working.’ And we’ll see what happens here in the next days, weeks, depending how he heals.”
