It feels like forever ago that Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman and quarterback Tyler Buchner embraced on the EverBank Stadium turf after beating South Carolina in the 2022 Gator Bowl.

Buchner had just delivered Freeman his first-ever bowl win, earning MVP honors with 274 passing yards and three touchdowns, plus 61 yards and two scores on the ground. The memory of that performance is still vivid — but so much has happened since.

Buchner’s college career has been a winding journey. He transferred to Alabama and back, tried his hand at college lacrosse, returned to football, switched to wide receiver, and eventually settled back at quarterback for his final 2025 season.

The flash of his on-field dominance three years ago is less visible now, but his influence hasn’t diminished. In the quarterback room, Buchner is a steady presence, offering guidance and perspective that only comes from experience.

“I’m really pleased to hear that,” Freeman said Sunday. “I’m not always in that quarterback room or in those meetings, but for a guy with experience at multiple places and in multiple roles, to know that he’s impacting that room is, for me, more valuable than anything.”

Buchner’s contributions extend beyond mentoring quarterbacks. He serves as the team’s extra point and field goal holder. He stumbled at the end of the Texas A&M game on Sept. 13, but made a key first-down pickup on a trick play against NC State on Oct. 11.

With six games left in his college career, Buchner’s story is far from over. His role has evolved, but it’s clear he’s still leaving his mark — not just in stats, but in the development of his teammates and the culture of the program.

“The ability to make your teammates better is invaluable,” Freeman said. “We’re grateful to have him on our team. He embraces the role he’s been given, and hopefully he continues to take on roles that impact the game.”

Notre Dame Quote of the Day

“We have plans, and then we have to adapt and adjust. That’s more than anything. We don’t know what exactly the weather will be and what’s going to happen, but we have to make sure we have a plan, and we do for all the different scenarios that could happen.”
