Tim Hyde reaction on expected hire of Joe Rudolph as offensive line coach
“I’m ecstatic, seriously. When Coach Hiestand retired, [Rudolph] was the first guy I posted about [on the Lou Somogyi message board],” Hyde said. “I think he’s one of the premier coaches out there when it comes to offensive line. I’ve studied him over the years and I’ve heard him at clinics. The dude is a legit offensive line coach.
“I’m a big believer in your upbringing; who has raised you in the football world. When you look at Coach Rudolph, he played for Barry Alvarez. He was in Alvarez’s first recruiting class … He goes to the Rose Bowl, wins it, goes to the NFL, and who does he play for in the NFL? Joe Gruden. And his offensive line coach in the NFL for a couple years with the Eagles? Bill Callahan.

“He has a huge pedigree … I could sit here and talk for hours about Rudolph. His background is unbelievable. The way he teaches is unbelievable. How are Notre Dame fans not doing backflips about this hire?”
Rudolph, 50, is joining Notre Dame’s staff after one season with the Hokies. He brings eight years of experience coaching offensive lines in the Power Five. He is best known for his 2015-21 stint as Wisconsin’s offensive line coach. He was also the Badgers’ offensive coordinator and associate head coach in each of his seven seasons on staff. He followed head coach Paul Chryst to Wisconsin after three years at Pittsburgh, where he was the associate head coach and offensive coordinator.
