Notre Dame quarterback Tyler Buchner has much to prove. There is no denying that.

This week, Pro Football Focus reaffirmed that statement with the outlet’s annual rankings of the top college quarterbacks in the country. Buchner, a true sophomore who is the favorite to be named Notre Dame’s 2022 starter, ranked No. 46 on the list.

Buchner has yet to start a single college game. He appeared in 10 as a freshman, but those reps came mostly in package situations. He was asked to run, and he was asked to run a lot. This fall, he’s going to be asked to do it all.

Been there, done that.

Buchner accounted for 6,084 yards and 81 touchdowns as a junior at Bishop’s School in La Jolla, Calif, in 2019. Fifty-three of those scores came through the air. So did nearly 75% of the yardage. He can do more than run, but analysts haven’t seen it at the collegiate level.

Last year, Buchner ran 46 times for 336 yards and three touchdowns. His average yards per carry (7.3) ranked first among all ball carriers who rushed at least 10 times. He went 21-of-35 for 298 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions.

Buchner isn’t just a gimmicky guy anymore. He’s likely Notre Dame’s starter. Can he be the guy who lit it up for Bishop’s three years ago, or is the learning curve going to be too much at a place like Notre Dame? Only time will tell.

Buchner is being thrown directly into the fire if he is indeed the starter. He has to go up against a signal caller who appeared in the top five on PFF’s list in Ohio State’s CJ Stroud. Notre Dame faces five QBs who made the cut including Stroud.

He’s a look at all 50. Notre Dame opponents are in bold.
