Jayden Bellamy spent two semesters at Notre Dame. He intends for those to be his only two.

Bellamy, a freshman cornerback, entered his name in the transfer portal Monday, BlueandGold.com can confirm. He will have four seasons of eligibility at his next destination.

The 5-foot-11, 175-pound Bellamy did not appear in a game for the Irish this season and took a redshirt year. A concussion kept him out of uniform for the last several weeks of the regular season. He was a January 2022 enrollee and participated in spring practice.

Bellamy is the first member of Notre Dame’s 22-player 2022 signing class to seek a transfer. He is the second to step away from the football program, though. Offensive lineman Joey Tanona medically retired before preseason camp due to a head injury suffered in a car crash.

Notre Dame’s 2022 cornerback signing class included three players: Bellamy, Benjamin Morrison and Jaden Mickey. The latter two were part of the cornerback rotation as freshmen, with Morrison forcing his way into the starting lineup in September. Mickey played 219 snaps in the regular season and started the 38-27 loss to USC Nov. 26. Morrison has 30 tackles, 4 passes broken up and a team-high 5 interceptions.

All told, the Irish had six underclassman cornerbacks on the 2022 roster. Morrison and Mickey were the only ones to appear in more than one game this year.

Bellamy came to Notre Dame from Oradell (N.J.) Bergen Catholic High School, where he was teammates with Irish freshman quarterback Steve Angeli. He was a three-star prospect and the No. 456 player in the 2022 On3 Consensus. He originally committed to the Irish on July 2, 2021, when Marcus Freeman was the defensive coordinator, choosing them over Penn State. His top six also consisted of Clemson, Ohio State, Oklahoma and Rutgers.

Bellamy began his career at cornerback, but Notre Dame didn’t rule out later moving him to safety. The Irish did not sign any freshman safeties in the 2022 class.

Bellamy’s father, Jay, played in the NFL for 14 years, spending 1994-2000 with the Seattle Seahawks and 2001-07 with the New Orleans Saints.
